Pilot program aims to fast-track asylum cases at the southern border

Washington (CNN)The Trump administration has begun a pilot program in El Paso, Texas, aimed at speeding up the time it takes to adjudicate asylum cases, according to two Department of Homeland Security officials. The Washington Post first reported the El Paso program, saying it will result in decisions in 10 days or fewer. The Justice Department’s Executive Office of Immigration Review, which oversees the nation’s immigration courts, did not immediately respond to a request for comment. The expedited process is in line with the administration’s efforts to curtail the flow of asylum seekers to the United States. CNN reported this week that the US is also close to implementing an agreement with Guatemala that would transfer asylum seekers to that …

Flooding unearthed a bear skull in Kansas that’s at least hundreds of years old

(CNN)Two sisters kayaking on the Arkansas River this summer made a historic find a huge bear skull that is hundreds if not thousands of years old. The skull is about 16 inches long and 8.5 inches wide and has a fossilized appearance, which led the paleontologists to wonder whether it was from a modern grizzly or a more primitive species, the wildlife department said. “The bear skull was washed out of the same river sediments that routinely produce the skulls and bones of the American bison, some of which could date back as far as the last Ice Age,” said Mike Everhart, one of the Sternberg paleontologists who examined the skull. “Whether it is hundreds or thousands of years old, …

own golf resort in Miami. Walter Shaub, the former head of the U.S. Office of Government Ethics, respectively described Thursday’s announcement by acting chief of staff Mick Mulvaney as “unacceptable” and “the most overt corruption to date.” “We have had him violating the emoluments clause since day one and now he’s going out and openly asking foreign governments to subsidize his resorts in connection with the G-7,” he continued. “He’s got his hand out to foreign governments and if this Congress puts up with that, they are to blame as well.” “How any Senator could fail to object to this is beyond me,” he wrote in one tweet. “There’s no universe in which anyone could believe that, in a country as …

Three questions every candidate should answer at the debate

(CNN)The headlines and protest signs tell a unified story: this is an extraordinary time for women in this country. Everywhere, they are leading the charge. In the 2018 midterm elections, women won a record number of seats in congress with a total of 127 women now serving in the House and Senate. It’s also remarkable that five Democratic women are currently in the presidential race. Women continue to march, vote and run for office in unprecedented numbers. And, once again, women will play a pivotal role in determining who wins the presidency in 2020. Yet, in last month’s Democratic primary debate, moderators asked over 40 questions — and made no mention of abortion, reproductive rights, child care or the gender …

US Sen. Ted Cruz rips Beijing ‘dictatorship’ during Hong Kong visit

Hong Kong (CNN)US Sen. Ted Cruz on Saturday condemned China’s handling of pro-democracy protests in Hong Kong, saying suppression of free speech in the territory showed fear from what he called a “dictatorship” in Beijing. “A protester has power that makes the dictatorship tremble,” Cruz said, comparing a man shot in the chest by a Hong Kong police officer last week to the protester who stared down a column of tanks in Tiananmen Square during the 1989 anti-government protests. Asked about the violent turn some of the Hong Kong protests have taken in recent weeks, Cruz said he had not seen violence on the part of the protesters, who have been vandalizing subway stations and businesses with ties to China …
