Earth was on the other side of the galaxy when dinosaurs reigned

(CNN)Apart from the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, there aren’t many connections between space and dinosaurs outside of the imagination. But that all changed when NASA research scientist Jessie Christiansen brought the two together in an animation on social media this month. She told her fellow stargazers that before they went extinct, dinosaurs wouldn’t have even seen these stars in the sky because they didn’t exist until millions of years after the extinction event. And she told them that when dinosaurs such as stegosaurs roamed the Earth, our entire solar neighborhood was on the opposite of the Milky Way galaxy that it is now. Christiansen wasn’t sharing new information, she said. But the fact caught …

Fate of DACA immigrants may hang on vote of Chief Justice Roberts

(CNN)At the close of Supreme Court arguments Tuesday over the fate of certain young undocumented immigrants, the question appeared to be: What will John Roberts do? In the end, Roberts may not be willing to rule in a way that means past DACA recipients suddenly have benefits revoked and face deportation. His remarks left open the possibility that this conservative court would defy predictions and rule against the Trump administration. Roberts’ vote will ultimately affect the futures of some 700,000 young adults who were brought to this country without authorization. His decision and the court’s overall decision, likely handed down in spring 2020, will also shape public perceptions of the relationship between America’s top jurist and President Donald Trump. It …

Humanity is reaching the point of no return regarding ecology. Planting trees is a great solution, but it isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal given the immense complexity of the environmental issues we as a species face. Plastic continues to be a huge problem. Bored Panda has already covered a perfect example of how much it affects our oceans with this diver’s first-hand experience with plastic waste in our oceans. Bored Panda reached out to SOAP Refill Station to comment on this new eco-friendly movement. SOAP Refill Station is a home and body care …

Fukushima’s Contaminated Farmlands To Become Hub Of Green Energy

Fukushima, the site of one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters ever, is looking for a clean and green rebranding. A $2.75-billion project has been launched to turn Japan’s northeastern prefecture of Fukushima into a renewable energy hub, Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asian Review reports. The plan is to construct 11 solar power plants and 10 wind power plants on mountainous areas and farmlands that cannot be cultivated due to radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. When up and running, the project hopes to pump out the equivalent power of two-thirds of a nuclear power plant.  The idea to reinvent Fukushima as a renewable energy wonderland has been in talks for several years, but suffered setbacks with investment. Now, with …

Give your spouse and your dog some time alone together. “You probably had them get to know your parents and friends in this way when you started to become more serious, right? Dinosaurs Lived On The Other Side Of The Galaxy, NASA Astrophysicist Demonstrates

Cleopatra lived closer in time to the creation of the hit TV show RuPaul’s Drag Race than she did to the construction of the Great Pyramid at Giza. Also, Oxford University is older than the Aztecs (Oxford began teaching in 1096, the Aztecs were around from about 1300). Here’s one more example for you to mess with your sense of time, as a NASA scientist has recently pointed out on Twitter: When dinosaurs roamed the Earth, they did so on the other side of the freaking galaxy. As you all know, just as the Earth rotates around the Sun, the Sun (with all the planets in tow) rotates around the center of the galaxy. We’re moving at around 828,000 kilometers (514,500 miles) per hour, at a distance …

The Worlds Thickest Mountain Glacier Has Started To Lose Ice

The Taku Glacier in Alaska is the thickest Alpine glacier in the world and one of the few glaciers that had managed to avoid major melting. This is no longer the case. Climate change does not discriminate and comes for everyone. The most recent analysis shows Taku is shrinking as it is finally beginning to melt.   Researcher Mauri Pelto studied Taku as well as 249 other glaciers worldwide, using data spanning decades. Unlike the other glaciers, Taku was stable and was until the late 1980s. However, precise observations show that this was just the calm before the storm. Observational data from the Operational Land Imager on NASA’s Landsat 8 satellite starkly show that this sturdy glacier has begun thawing. The …

Most of the buyers were men from Pakistan who wanted to marry the women to gain EU citizenship so they could live and work in Europe. The BBC understands a number of men were arrested by police but there was not enough evidence to charge them. It is believed at least one man has since been deported from the UK.
