Those crappy pre-installed Android apps can be full of security holes

If you’ve ever bought an Android phone, there’s a good chance you booted it up to find it pre-loaded with junk you definitely didn’t ask for. These pre-installed apps can be clunky, annoying to remove, rarely updated… and, it turns out, full of security holes. Security firm Kryptowire built a tool to automatically scan a large number of Android devices for signs of security shortcomings and, in a study funded by the U.S. Department of Homeland Security, ran it on phones from 29 different vendors. Now, the majority of these vendors are ones most people have never heard of — but a few big names like Asus, Samsung and Sony make appearances. Kryptowire says they found vulnerabilities of all different …

Know your startups value so you can communicate it to investors

Blair Silverberg I’ve always told companies that investors have a much easier job than they do. To be good at their jobs, investors have to know how to do math and make decisions. As a business owner, you have to do both while also running your business. The numbers are simple; it’s the calculations that are complex Where is your company investing its financial resources? Most growing companies invest heavily in sales and marketing or research and development. What is the return on this investment?  For example, how much gross profit (revenue x gross margin percentage) does a given sales and marketing investment produce? How does that number compare to your cost of capital? If it’s higher, your company is creating value. If it’s lower, …

120,000 Ribbons Hover Where The Berlin Wall Once Stood To Mark The 30-Year Anniversary Of Its Fall

During a time when it seems like walls between individuals and nations are popping up left and right, we are also reminded of when walls were torn down and people were once again reunited. On November 9th, Berlin celebrated the 30th anniversary of the Peaceful Revolution and the Fall of the Berlin Wall. The highlight of the celebration was Patrick Shearn’s and his Poetic Kinetics team’s colorful motion art installation comprised of 120,000 colorful fabric ribbons. Berlin hosted an open-air art installation commemorating the Peaceful Revolution’s 30th Anniversary Image credits: Image credits: Image credits: Poetic Kinetics on Instagram Around 9,500 feet of rope was used for the installation with more than 1,250 hand-tied knots. Jury awards Planned Parenthood nearly $1M over secret videos by pro-life group

David Daleiden (AP Photo/Bob Levey, File) Daleiden’s lawyers argued that he and Merritt were investigating “violent felonies,” where they believed infants were being born alive at Planned Parenthood clinics and that the organization was profiting off the sale of fetal tissue for medical research. They argued Daleiden’s work as a citizen journalist should be protected. During the six-week trial, U.S. District Judge William Orrick III ruled the jury could not consider any information Daleiden had discovered as a result of his video project. At least three congressional committees and law enforcement officials in 13 states launched investigations into Planned Parenthood after Daleiden’s group released the footage in 2015. None of the probes confirmed any wrongdoing by Planned Parenthood. JUDGE OVERTURNS …

How Elise Axion Found Self-Acceptance While Battling The Vicious Cycle Of Hidradenitis Suppurativa

By Elise Axon Updated November 14, 2019 It’s a dreary Monday afternoon, and I’m back in the surroundings of the familiar white-walled waiting room, here to see my dermatologist once again. As grateful as I am for this clinic, it’s not the greatest place to have to visit every 6-8 weeks. I wonder what will come from today’s appointment with Dr. August. I was young when I first started getting little boils, around 8 years old. My mother had also suffered with this horrendous condition for many years, so when it first reared its ugly head, she knew exactly what it was. My mother educated me and took me straight to the doctor so we could get the ball rolling …

Apples sexist credit card isnt just a PR problem its a nightmare for us all | Arwa Mahdawi

Men including Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak have been awarded significantly more credit that their wives. Its a bleak insight into our algorithmic future, writes Arwa Mahdawi What is white, fragile and sexist? There are innumerable answers to that question, but the one Im looking for in this instance is the Apple Card. The tech giant released its first branded credit card, managed by Goldman Sachs, earlier this year. The fancy titanium card is famously delicate; Apple has warned people not to store it in a leather wallet because it is easily damaged. As it turns out, the card seems to be as allergic to women as it is to leather. Last week, David Heinemeier Hansson, a high-profile tech entrepreneur, tweeted …

Nativism is driving the far-right surge in Europe and it is here to stay | Cas Mudde

Spains Vox party came in third as the mainstreaming and normalization of the far right has become a common phenomenon of 21st-century Europe In 2016, the far-right Vox party gained a mere 0.2% of the vote in the Spanish legislative elections. This Sunday, Vox came in third with an estimated 15.1% percent, 5.7% behind the mainstream right Popular party (PP). Within three years, Spain has transformed from a European exception into a European average in terms of far-right electoral success. As I argue in my new book rise in the polls in October 2018, when violent clashes between the police and pro-independence supporters in Barcelona. As the issue remained high on the political agenda, Vox gained 10.3% in the April …

Earth was on the other side of the galaxy when dinosaurs reigned

(CNN)Apart from the asteroid that wiped out the dinosaurs 65 million years ago, there aren’t many connections between space and dinosaurs outside of the imagination. But that all changed when NASA research scientist Jessie Christiansen brought the two together in an animation on social media this month. She told her fellow stargazers that before they went extinct, dinosaurs wouldn’t have even seen these stars in the sky because they didn’t exist until millions of years after the extinction event. And she told them that when dinosaurs such as stegosaurs roamed the Earth, our entire solar neighborhood was on the opposite of the Milky Way galaxy that it is now. Christiansen wasn’t sharing new information, she said. But the fact caught …

Fate of DACA immigrants may hang on vote of Chief Justice Roberts

(CNN)At the close of Supreme Court arguments Tuesday over the fate of certain young undocumented immigrants, the question appeared to be: What will John Roberts do? In the end, Roberts may not be willing to rule in a way that means past DACA recipients suddenly have benefits revoked and face deportation. His remarks left open the possibility that this conservative court would defy predictions and rule against the Trump administration. Roberts’ vote will ultimately affect the futures of some 700,000 young adults who were brought to this country without authorization. His decision and the court’s overall decision, likely handed down in spring 2020, will also shape public perceptions of the relationship between America’s top jurist and President Donald Trump. It …

This Drugstore Urges Its Customers To Be Eco-Friendly By Placing A Cleaning Product Refilling Station

Humanity is reaching the point of no return regarding ecology. Planting trees is a great solution, but it isn’t a one-size-fits-all deal given the immense complexity of the environmental issues we as a species face. Plastic continues to be a huge problem. Not only does it take energy and other resources to produce, but also much of it ends up as waste in the various natural habitats around the globe. Bored Panda has already covered a perfect example of how much it affects our oceans with this diver’s first-hand experience with plastic waste in our oceans. Bored Panda reached out to SOAP Refill Station to comment on this new eco-friendly movement. SOAP Refill Station is a home and body care …

Fukushima’s Contaminated Farmlands To Become Hub Of Green Energy

Fukushima, the site of one of the world’s worst nuclear disasters ever, is looking for a clean and green rebranding. A $2.75-billion project has been launched to turn Japan’s northeastern prefecture of Fukushima into a renewable energy hub, Japanese newspaper Nikkei Asian Review reports. The plan is to construct 11 solar power plants and 10 wind power plants on mountainous areas and farmlands that cannot be cultivated due to radiation from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in 2011. When up and running, the project hopes to pump out the equivalent power of two-thirds of a nuclear power plant.  The idea to reinvent Fukushima as a renewable energy wonderland has been in talks for several years, but suffered setbacks with investment. Now, with …

Frontier Car Group, the Berlin-based startup building used car marketplaces targeting high-growth, emerging markets, has picked up another significant round of funding from a strategic backer also focusing on the same geographical opportunity.
